Chapter 6 Blog

Chapter 6 was a very informative chapter, as it introduces different tools and comprehension strategies for students to use involving digital texts. I found the chart on page 83 to be very useful because it shows readers what both the students and teachers do before, during and after reading. I just learned about the "B,D,A" reading strategy in one of my classes, and I find this strategy to be extremely helpful because you get to ask students their prior knowledge and by the end of the lesson, you can see what they learned, and what they got from the material, which is extremely beneficial.

I found the WebQuests and the Sticky Notes to be a tremendously useful tools for students because it actively engages them in their learning and it motivates them to want to learn more. This is an effective strategy; as I am someone who is a visual learner, and being able to do a WebQuest online would be useful and sticky notes, because it tracks where I left off, and where I had trouble reading and if I did not understand something, all I did was mark it with a sticky note. During these tools, I would say that students are guided throughout both these processes and have guidance on how they will be evaluated.

It was also very interesting to read about the different digital texts/tools students use. They use the virtual author visits, Google Lit Trips, Book Reviews and Book Talks. These are beneficial sites for students, as they should be interested in using them to increase their learning. It is very helpful to read about these tools, because maybe someday I could use these resources in my own classroom, and hope to motivate my students to want to learn. I never knew about all these digital text tools that students and teachers can use in the classroom, and I am intrigued to see what else this class has to bring!

  1. Hey Caroline, I agree with everything that you mentioned! The B,D,A reading is so helpful to students so that they can remember what is happening within the story especially the really good details that make the story. I also love your take on the sticky notes as for myself I use sticky notes for everything so that I don't forget whatI have to do or what I am reading. Good job!

  2. Hi Caroline! I agree that the BDA framework is an excellent strategy for teachers to use in order to foster their students' comprehension of text. It gives students the time to look deeper into a story, and pick it apart piece by piece, to understand the bigger concepts. It is also important that teachers model these skills so students know how to effectively use these strategies in each step!
