Chapter 7 Blog

Chapter 7 focuses on the idea of students using digital writing which is described as, "compositions created with and oftentimes for reading or viewing on a computer"(99). This chapter also focuses on the types of tools that students use, for example, blogs, anchor charts, and ever notes. The point of a blog is for students to write/express their opinions on the content material that they are learning in class, as it allows other classmates' to comment and agree or disagree with their opinion. Blogs are worldwide and it lets others see what their prior knowledge and their comprehension of the material.

While reading through this chapter, I have realized that I have not really used blogs until this course began. I am seeing that it is becoming more worldwide and students are using it more frequently for their classes. "Blogs provide an easy and natural transition from paper-and-pencil response activities to online writing environments because they are easy to use and intuitive"(106). The more I am becoming familiar with blogging, I highly recommend teachers to use this tool for their students as they are able to share their own information and interpret ideas from one another.

While exploring chapter 7, I found the digital anchor charts to be an extremely useful tool for students to use. The anchor charts focus on a particular strategy and serve as a representation of the students' thinking. Teachers can place these charts all around the classroom as students are able to refer back to them for guidelines. I really enjoyed how the book provided the reader an idea of how the teachers and students use the anchor charts in a classroom situation as it has all vocabulary words written on them. I have never used or been taught how to use a digital anchor chart, yet I feel like I will be able to use this type of digital tool in my own classroom with my students one day! This chapter was extremely informative and I was able to learn more information as it can contribute to my own lesson plans one day!

  1. Hi Caroline! I definitely agree that this was a very informative chapter. It provided a lot of resources for teaching writing online and the best strategies to foster students' writing skills. I think that online writing is great and can motivate students to produce their best quality work. In the chapter, the author explained her observation of a 3rd grade student working on an online book review. Because she knew her online audience was much larger than any audience she had written for in the past, she wanted to make sure she did a good job! She said "I want this to be really good because my Grandma G in Arizona is going to read it and I know my friends will too (100)."

  2. Hi Caroline! I agree with you that blogs were never something I had tried until this class. I really like how we are able to read other students opinions on the chapters we read. I also agree with you that although I have never used digital anchor charts before they may be something I will use in my own classroom one day.
