Chapter 8 Blog
Chapter 8 discusses the technology across the curriculum and the importance of students' thinking and how well they are able to develop questions. "By modeling how you organize, understand, and ask questions about the material, teachers increase the likelihood of students becoming interested and engaged in content learning"(121). Teacher's have a lot of influence on their students because they look up to them and we are the ones who are guiding them through the material. It is important for students to make prior and background knowledge and connections to the text because it is based on their past and their own personal experience. It is important to motivate the students and have them think critically and independently to see if they are applying and inferring and understanding the material. Being an English major and a reading minor, I feel as if every time I read something I always stop and relate it to a connection of mine, without even knowing it because it is an automatic stimulus that just happens because I am so used to doing the different kinds of thinking.
The idea of students using the Internet to find sources and cite their source is excellent. Starting them at somewhat of an early age is good because throughout their school years they will become familiar with how to cite things. I have never heard of Inquiry learning, but it is "a stance toward experiences and ideas---a willingness to wonder, to ask questions, and to see to understand by collaborating with others"(123). This is an excellent learning strategy for teaching and myself to use in the classroom because it gets the students to think and gain insight into their own learning. This chapter includes a lot of questions for students to ask themselves while they are reading/searching for a topic. This chapter also goes into detail about students using EasyBib, GoogleDocs, and InstaGrok. I am only familiar with EasyBib, and I always use that website as it helps me cite all of my sources for my papers. It is a quick and easy source and provides all the correct material. This chapter provides great information about students using the Internet and how to think critically and how I can use all of these techniques in my classroom one day. I cannot wait to see what chapter 9 is all about!

Hi Caroline! I absolutely agree with you that teachers have a lot of influence on the students. If the teacher is not having fun teaching a lesson, the students will not have any fun doing the lesson. I also agree that having children cite sources from a young age is a wonderful idea. I have always been taught how to use websites such as Easybib to sight sources however, I have never been taught very much about how to paraphrase and I think that is a skill children should begin to learn.
ReplyDeleteHey Caroline! I agree with everything that you have mentioned in your blog. It is very important for students to use their own experiences and make connections when reading their stories. Just like you I use Easybib because it is super useful and I'm not sure what I would do with it while creating citations!
