Chapter 9 Blog

Chapter 9 focuses on the assessment in a literacy 2.0 environment providing knowledge for students that have the ability to be creative and authentic in their learning. I did not know that assessment is viewed in two different terms; being formative and summative. Formative focuses on the process of learning and provides information needed to adjust teaching and support learning. Summative focuses on learning at a particular point and provides information on the outcome of the learning. This was very interesting to learn because as a teacher, you are able to capture the students' skills, and strategies of new literacies! This chapter continues to discuss how assessments can be used for observation, checklists, surveys and rubrics.

I found it interesting that the Collaboration Rubric and the think-aloud survey was shown in the chapter and I found that to be extremely helpful because this is what teachers go off of to observe their students and this is what students use to expand their mind in learning. It is also interesting how teachers have to change and be flexible to change their common core standards because they are attempting to teach to the text, but it is hard because they want their students to know everything and be successful when taking high-stakes tests. I liked the use of Evernote because it can display all of the students assessments and how they are progressing. It makes it easier while extending the depth and complexity of analysis. My favorite assessment tool is probably observation because as a teacher and a student you can observe other classmates and observe yourself and motivate oneself to learn and become a better learner. Holding one-on-one conferences is a positive tool for both the teacher and the student. Teachers can analyze the students and then share with the parents  and access students' rubrics as they show how well a student can stay focused, if they have respect towards other classmates, and if they are bringing ideas to a group. Chapter 9 was full of useful information and I cannot wait to see what chapter 10 is all about!

  1. Hi Caroline! I agree that Evernote seems like a wonderful too. I cannot wait to try it in my own classroom. I also agree that one-on-one conferences can still be a wonderful tool as well.

  2. Hey Caroline! I agree with you on the observation as being a great assessment tool! I also agree with you on having one-on-one sessions with the students because it can tell you where the student is and how they are coming along with their writing and etc.
